Frequently Asked Questions when Sponsoring a Child with African Children Today (ACT)
How much does it cost to sponsor a child and how is the money used?
For only 38 dollars a month you can sponsor a special child in Uganda. Your gift is tax-deductible and 100% of your donation will go directly to the child and their family for a private school education, food, clothing, medical care, and a weekly Bible Study / Leadership Training class for sponsored children. No money is taken out for administration fees since ACT is managed by volunteers. This $38 monthly investment is beyond a blessing for children, making an incredible impact in their lives and futures.
What is my time commitment for sponsoring a child?
Your sponsorship is active as long as the child is in school. Rakai has two schools – a primary school (which is very similar to our grade school levels) and a secondary school (which is very similar to high school). You do not need to renew your sponsorship each year – your sponsorship will continue as long as you provide the monthly financial support, and we pray this sponsorship lasts for many years.
Do I pay the sponsorship fee every month – or may I pay quarterly or yearly?
You can pay however you would like – monthly, quarterly or yearly. You will simply write a check to one of our non-profit partners, note the sponsored child’s name and number on the memo line, and then send check to African Children Today, Inc. P.O Box 390123, Edina, Mn 55439. Or alternatively, you may set up a direct payment from your Bank Account.
How are the children selected to be sponsored?
School teachers in Rakai select the children who would be good candidates for sponsorship, based on the child’s school work, self-motivation, potential, and family support. Usually a child is 8 or 9 years old when they are considered for sponsorship. We believe they will become the future leaders of Uganda!
May I write to my sponsored child, and will I receive a letter back?
This is the best part of sponsoring an ACT child! You have the ability to email a letter and photographs to your sponsored child as often as you’d like. There is no postal service in Rakai; therefore all correspondence is done via email. Tell your child about your family, the weather, and your hobbies. And send family photos and pictures of Minnesota. (Please don’t send pictures of your house or other possessions.)
